The first golf club of Kolkata was the royal Kolkata golf club. Regarded as the cultural hub of India every corner of this city and colonial eastern metropolis had a rich history, heritage, and tradition. This city not having only a hosting history of golfing, Kolkata also nourishes several well-known golfers like SSP Chawrasia who represented India in Rio Olympics. But now let us find out the beginning of this legacy.

 

Golf culture in Kolkata was beginning long before even the US & UK around near 1829. The first golf club of Kolkata was founded in 1829 as The Calcutta Golf Club but when King George V and Queen bestowed the title “Royal”, it became The Royal Kolkata Golf Club. The first venue of this club was today’s Dum Dum airport area then it shifted to Maidan and finally it moved to today’s Golf Club Road, Tollygunge in 1910.

The ladies Golf club in the entire country was established by twelve girls members in Kolkata on May 7, 1891.

 

Some of the prestigious golf tournaments around the country used to be hosted by the Golf clubs of Kolkata. Like the amateur golf championship of India. This tournament is the second oldest golf tournament after the British open until 1958, by the formation of IGU, this tournament shifted to New Delhi.

Others golf clubs in Kolkata are Fort William Golf Course is a 9 hole golf course near Fort William, Tollygunge Golf Club is an 18 hole, 70 par 100-acre championship golf course near Deshpran Sasmal Road, Eco Park Golf Course is the newest one.
