How Politics has changed in Bengal since 90s!

There was a time when the politics of Bengal were all about ‘Michils,’ agitation and slogans. That was the only way back then to meet people either via radio or newspaper. The parties used to meet at the coffee house in the 1990s to discuss their goals, not like today, where they tend to meet at 5-star hotels or private bungalows. The way politicians interact today is very different from the way they used to communicate decades ago.

But in this high-tech society, everything becomes one click away, everything you need to click the button from ordering food to automated flush, and the rest can tackle alexia. Anyways coming to the era of Indian politics.

Today after we observe politics, it’s more like Bangla daily soap; the promotions are hilarious. Every party is spending time & effort & of course money, to reach to people in innovative ways. Just like how movie promotions are doing these days. But social media play a giant role in it, allowing incumbents and newcomers alike to speak directly to constituents on everything from politics to what they have for dinner. The parties also own personal PR teams to reach people rapidly just like ‘Corona’. This includes Twitter trends, Twitter polls, trolling, fake news, etc.

Talking about fake news, I remember media also plays an enormous role in democracy, a minimum of that’s what I grew up knowing. But today! the media don’t just report the news but they create one, with extra Mayonnaise and double chicken topping. Rather than promoting or questioning jobs, education, or health to Government, the media end up asking ‘kya aapke toothpaste me namak hai? Joke apart!

Ekushey’s vote is knocking on the door. Now the fight is against June aunty and Sreemoyee. Aren’t politics the same? Anyway, let’s talk forward, so when the opposition is powerful enough on social media, a “Voting strategist” took the initiative to spread the word over the phone. Sounds romantic? Well, it’s not in any respect like this! It’s literally like someone is complaining about not getting a bar of chocolate, lollipops, or in this case ‘Rossogolla’.

Parties already started the method of strengthening the campaign by forming WhatsApp groups social media PR team, Hashtags, etc. In remote areas where there aren’t any Android phones, the group is going to be given three phones in a very group of 100 people. Awkward silence!
