India has defeated Australia in tests on their home soil in the last Border-Gavaskar trophy and preparing for the upcoming 4 match home series against England. Due to the win against Australia, they almost secured their place to go to the final.
ICC Test Championship, which is played over 2 years time span, started in 2018. The rule suggests that among the top ranking 9 teams, each team has to play a test series against six teams throughout the tournament. Each series contains a total of 120 points, irrespective of how many matches are played. So, if there is a four-match series, a team can get 30 points for each win, and 10 points for a draw, losing a match won’t deduct any point. So, after each team completes their six series, the top 2 teams in the points table would qualify for the finals. And, if the final ends up with a draw, both the finalist will be considered as joint winners.
Till now, India has played 5 series, and except for the loss against New Zealand on their soil, they have won all. Currently, they are on the top of the table, with 430 points, following by New Zealand with 420 points. The series against England is India’s last series in the group stage. Even if India can draw the series, they will qualify for the finals. The only condition they can get eliminated is if England wins all 4 matches of the series.
India is coming to the series strengthening their batting lineup, as skipper Virat Kohli joins the series, and all the other players are top of their confidence after the Australia series. Things will be tough for England. We can say that it is a matter of time for India to qualify for the finals.
