Connecting the ‘City of Joy’ to the different fishing communities and traders from outside the native land, Kidderpore became a strategic location for the ‘wet dock’ for the Kolkata Port. The site is situated in the east of the Hooghly river beheading to the waters of the Bay of Bengal.

After setting the British colonies in Kolkata, the foreigners were deeply bothered about the lack of ports in the city in spite of its location in such a strategic position. Thus, the 19th century Kolkata ruled by the East India Company witnessed the emergence of Kidderpore Dock and its surrounding settlement thereby strengthening outside relationships and business of the city. The Britishers have left, but the boon in disguise remained for us. Moreover, if you look back through the pages of history, the Kidderpore dock has witnessed the wrath of the World Wars, especially when there was a Japanese air raid directly on the Kidderpore Dock Complex.

The Kidderpore dock has a unique aspect, incorporating three different modes of transportation i.e. waterways, rails, and road. In 2019, the Kidderpore dock of Kolkata Port Trust initiated ‘Coastal Shipping’. The first vessel to land in this dock was from Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu. There are even plans for making transportation facilities more environmentally friendly, thus cars from South India will be shipped to this nodal connection through waterways.

The settlement that grew around this strategic location enlists a fancy market where you can get any kind of foreign goods. Here, electronic gadgets of different brands are available at cheap and negotiable prices. However, the products purchased from here don’t offer any guaranteed quality since the bulks of goods traded from outside are without any proper details. So, make sure how much money you want to spend while visiting this fancy market of Kidderpore.
