Stereotypes of Modern Kolkata

Spread the love

Even though the city has come a long way, some stereotypes still remain. Probably the long instilled notions have yet not found a right way to alter. Hence, the rising concept of misogyny and conservativeness. The youth of today thereby faces much humiliation in society because of their new way of life and new visions for everything.

The city is very welcoming, but when it comes to women, the city still has notions of them getting married and settling down. The ambition of the lady is countered by the fears of her family. If she is getting older, it’s high time for her to think of making a family. Why so? Can’t she be self-sufficient? Can’t she pull herself up during the time of crises for herself as well as for her family? It’s high time Kolkata should think about it!

If a boy has too many friends from the opposite gender, he in no time is tagged as a ‘play boy’. No one would even come to ask him about the feeling he shares, but would efficiently try to introspect into his way of life drawing comments and opinions upon them. It’s high time Kolkata should think about it!

Some people in the city love to talk about other people’s life. Out of jealousy or hatred or what, no one knows. But definitely, for something that they cannot see through. That is a difference in mentality. Rigidity stands at the peak, and acceptance of different opinions at the bottom.

Hence arising connotations like,

“A woman should come back home by ten at night”

“You are the male member of the family, when are you getting a job?”

“Don’t make friends with him, he is gay…”

“Last night, the girl on the top floor of the apartment was partying with many male friends…”

“She slept with her boss to get that chair…”

“He doesn’t have a spine. He just listens to everything his wife says…”

“Oh my god, look at that girl, she is showing her body. Is that a proper dress?  Such characterless…”

“Did you see that couple? Kissing in the public. How shameless this generation is…”

Perhaps, there is a never-ending list to it. But all that the new generation wants to say, sums to this,

“My body, My life, My struggle, My rules. Correct me if I am rigid, but you can’t set the parameter of right and wrong.”
