Being an ardent fan of creativity has its own perks. Like, being creatively inclined lets you have a passion for different kinds of films. It allows you to savor numerous levels and verticals of film genres. The creative industry is flooding with such talents. Moreover, it is easy to find a budding actor, director, writer with mind-blowing expertise and skill set in this field. One such writer-director-actor, in particular, is Anurag Basu.

The Essence of the Script

One thing that sets every film apart is the script of the film. If film making is an epitome of art and creativity, the film script is the soul of film making.

A good script-

  • First appeals to the actors and makes them accept a project
  • Attracts other creatives and make them get etched to the project
  • Intrigues viewers and leaves a mark.

So, a script is the skeleton of a film. Basu’s films explode oodles of creativity with rich scripts.

From the Magical Lens of Ray

Bengalis are known for music, culture, and good films. We have the magical enigma of Satyajit Ray films flowing through our veins. Oscar-winning films and unforgettable scripts like-

PotherPachali, Gupi Gain Bagha Bain, HirakRajarDeshe, ApurSangshar

And many more have wowed the world, decades ago. Why people loved these films? Because Ray’s films knew no bounds in terms of exploring various kinds of stories, touching countless levels of emotions and portraying raw feelings on screen through the characters. In addition to this, forever cherishing music.

Basu is not afraid to experiment

Coming back to Anurag Basu films, he is not in the rat-race of giving out non-sensical commercial hits. Basu is not afraid to experiment and make movies for a smaller percentage of people who appreciate true art. He is not petrified by the false creatives for whom box office collection, action, and romance is the only kind of film making. Every Anurag Basu film has the magic of music that’s rooted to Bengal in some way or the other, has a plot that’s mind-boggling and emotionally moving, a creative team that leaves no bar of working hard and touching perfection.

Some Underrated Scores

Ludo

A new Netflix release Ludo is in a lot of talks recently, because the Basu magic is seen again in this explicitly creative and beautiful film. Like always, the film moves on a medium pace touching various levels of emotional satire. A fair bit of action, a pinch of drama, a spoonful of romance, a stomach full of comedy, scenes shot in Bengal, and music that has its core in Bangaliana.

Jagga Jasoos

We Bengalis can never forget one film- HirakRajarDeshe because it was only Revolutionary Ray who could have thought of “MagajDholaiJontro” in that era. However, Jagga Jasoos is not HirakRajarDeshe, but it sure was the only musical script made in Bollywood to date after Ray. The film wasn’t a box office hit. But, beautiful script, loads of emotional appeal, a terrific performance by Ranbir and Shashwata, and again, the music made this film all together beautiful.

Life in a Metro, Kites, Gangster, Murder

Basu tackled the theme of passion through movies like Life in a Metro, Kites, Gangster, Murder, and made an initial mark in the industry as a director. Again, these films had the most memorable music that we hum to date and beautiful storytelling.

Barfi!

A film set amidst the beautiful mountains of Darjeeling. With a plot revolving around cute deaf and dumb Barfi, revolving around characters like Jhilmil, Shruti, Clumsy police inspector, wicked Mr. Chakaraborty (Jhilmil’s dad), this film is a creative masterpiece. The bong- Hindi music, plot and everything that could be said about this beautiful film will be less.
