How Did the Armenians Come To Kolkata?

Armenians have a brief history in connection with Indian trade. They came from West Asia in the 16th century and by the time of Akbar’s reign, Armenians had established themselves as an affluent community in India. They held high administrative positions in Akbar’s court. Both Jahangir and Shah Jahan continued to extend support to the Armenians after Akbar. Thus their trade network spread in Calcutta, Bombay, Madras, and Surat.

During the 16th century, the Armenian trade saw its peak in Calcutta. So, Chinsurah became the home to the first Armenian Settlement that was also the center of Jute trade. , Armenians made Calcutta the commercial center during British rule.

What Does the Armenian Community in Kolkata Look Like Now?

As the Armenian community was flourishing in Calcutta, many Armenian churches were built. The Holy Church of Nazareth being the first. The shrinking Armenian community now comprises only 150 people living in Kolkata. The Armenian legacy is still going strong and living. They also observe the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day in the Armenian Church and celebrate Christmas on the 6th of January.
