In this era of rapid communication, we don’t feel the urge to tell our beloved ones something and wait for an eternity to get their reply. But back then, when mobile, internet was not available, the only medium of communication was sending letters. And the place which served a huge impact upon us for this purpose, currently situated at the southeast corner of Dalhousie Square, known as the General Post Office. This is one of the oldest landmarks of Kolkata.
Back in the 19th century, G.P.O. was established when the postal system was introduced here. And as Calcutta was the capital, it served a great purpose and was one of the busiest administrative blocs in Kolkata. The 220-year old lofted dome certainly projects the colonial style of architecture. The big clock over there was brought from the company in London who also constructed the ‘Big Ben Clock’ which is in London. The postal museum there consists of a huge collection of stamps, covers, and artifacts.
In the midst of enjoying the atmosphere of our city, we are day by day are passing out the entity of ‘Calcutta’ in oblivion. This building is an impression of the glorious past of our city and recently, it completed its 150 years.
We all have the duty to retain the glorious past of our city, don’t we?
