The first golf club of Kolkata was the royal Kolkata golf club. The first golf club of Kolkata was founded in 1829 as The Calcutta Golf Club but when King George V and Queen bestowed the title “Royal”, it became The Royal Kolkata Golf Club. The first venue of this club was today’s Dum Dum airport area then it shifted to Maidan and finally it moved to today’s Golf Club Road, Tollygunge in 1910.

The ladies Golf club in the entire country was established by twelve girls members in Kolkata on May 7, 1891.

Some of the prestigious golf tournaments around the country used to be hosted by the Golf clubs of Kolkata. Like the amateur golf championship of India. This tournament is the second oldest golf tournament after the British open until 1958, by the formation of IGU, this tournament shifted to New Delhi.
