Do you know that not just Cox’s Bazar, Ilish or the language, Dhaka is also famous for Dhakai Paratha! The famous street food of Bangladesh was also famous in Kolkata a few decades back. But things change with the sudden and gradual change of taste and food preferences.
With the invasion of different food items from other parts of the globe, we have forgotten about the most quintessential Bengali breakfast. There are only a handful of shops in the North and Southern part of Kolkata where this delicacy is still found.
Walk down the corner of Southern Avenue, a century-old misti shop called ‘New Jol Khabar’ which is the last shop of the famous Bengali breakfast. One of them is Dhakai Paratha. The shop still serves paratha mixed with dal tarkari.
Who runs the shop?
The shop is now run by Anath Ghosh ( the third generation) of the family. Ghosh, who is still trying to hold on to the tradition. Usually, parathas are cooked on Tawa but this special Dhaka Partha is deep-fried and it is crispy.
