Rosogollas, widely known as Rasgullas are the traditional Bengali sweets, first created in the markets of Bagbazaar, Calcutta, in the year 1868 by Nabin Chandra Das. These are nothing but soft and spongy balls of paneer, known as ‘Chhana’, dipped in sugar syrup. It has given Bengal one of the biggest business opportunities.
Perhaps, every person living in this city irrespective of any community culture has got a soft corner for rosogollas. People here eat rosogolla for breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and every time this hot and fresh desert gives them a sense of satisfaction and peace. Whether you pass the exam or get a job, whether you give birth to a child or get married, rosogolla is the one and the only thing that your friends, family members, or neighbors would ask for.
On almost every occasion, a bowl full of rosogollas would be found. Children trying to hide and eat rosogollas one after the other, even before the guests have arrived. And, the old members of the family pleading and requesting to have one piece of rosogolla every time it is available at home. You would even see young members of the family engaging in challenges of eating rosogollas.
Certainly, no one would know that a small little sponge ball would give so much pleasure and finally end up being an obsession.
