One such famous snack is Kabiraji, apart from sweet, Misti Doi, Mach, Bengalis love to take pride.
It was Dhirendranath Dey, who started this small cafe in 1935. It is to be believed that the word ‘Kabiraji’ derived from ‘coverage cutlet’ or ‘cover egg’ cutlet, a dish introduced by the British.
In the Shovabazar area of North Kolkata, there is a quaint little eatery named Dhiren’s Cabin. The signature dish of this shop is Fish Kabiraji.
Some of the city’s celebrated citizens from different walks of life including matinee idol, Uttam Kumar, Bhanu Bandopadhyay, Manna De, Ramkumar Chattopadhyay, Srikumar Chattopadhyay, Pankaj Roy were frequent customers for an evening snack.
